Dweeb News, Quickie Sad stuff

Lane Smith (1936 - 2005)

It was just a few days ago that someone asked me the 'Whatever happened to...' question concerning former "Lois and Clark" star Lane Smith.

Unfortunately, the obituaries page has a concise answer today.

The film and Television great - who played Perry White on the hit series - sadly passed away this morning. He was 69.

A family member of Smith's passed on the following message to the KryptonSite website :

"Hi and thanks for your concern and good wishes and prayers. We are sorry to tell you that my Uncle Lane Smith died earlier today, a blessed relief from his ALS. Thank you so much for your support - From the Family of Lane Smith".

Smith had been battling ALS for a while now. Better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, it is a progressive neuromuscular disease that weakens and eventually destroys motor neurons (components of the nervous system that connect the brain with the skeletal muscles). Skeletal muscles are involved with voluntary movements, such as walking and talking. The motor neurons transmit the command to move from the brain to the skeletal muscles, which respond by contracting. A person with ALS usually presents with problems in dexterity or gait resulting from muscle weakness, or with difficulty speaking or swallowing.

Smith's other credits include "Maidstone" (1970) - his film debut, "Red Dawn" (1984), "Air America" (1990), "The Mighty Ducks" (1992) and "Son-In-Law" (1993), one of his most memorable roles, in which he played the unapproving father of a young woman who brings the madcap Pauly Shore home for the Christmas break. Smith's last role was in the 2003 mini-series "Out of Order".

A true talent that will be sadly missed. EDITOR'S NOTE: A GOOD ACTOR AND A CHARMING SCREEN PRESENCE. GOD SPEED, MR. SMITH.
