A Bit of MOVIE Dweebing

EDITOR'S NOTE: AND JUST A SMIDGE MORE GENERAL CATCHING UP...

Burton & Carrey BELIEVE IT
Tim Burton and Jim Carrey are in talks with Alphaville's Jim Jacks and Sean Daniel to direct and star in, respectively, BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

The film will center on the exploits of Robert Ripley, a sport cartoonist who ran out of ideas and turned to the world of the strange and unusual. Ripley became a larger-than-life personality in the '30s and '40s, well-known for going around the world looking for oddities and getting into adventures while doing so EDITOR'S NOTE: BURTON AND CARREY SOUND LIKE A GOOD PAIRING ON THIS.

Caviezel Looks at DÉJÀ VU
Jim Caviezel is in talks to star in DEJA VU. He would join a cast that alread includes Denzel Washington.

The drama centers around a terrorist (Caviezel) who blows up a ferry. An FBI agent (Washington) who, upon discovering that a woman he loves was among the victims, travels back in time.

Tony Scott will direct from a script by Terry Rossio and Bill Marsilli. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce. EDITOR'S NOTE: TONY SCOTT. LOTS OF LOUD BOOMS! AND DENZEL WASHINGTON LOOKING SERIOUS AND ANGRY. (SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW)?

Grammer Acts Like a BEAST in X3
X-Men Films has reported that Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of "Beast" will have one of the most interesting roles in upcoming X-MEN 3. Director Brett Ratner will supposedly "dig deep into the minds of mutants who are not blessed with 'normal' looks."

Even though Beast has lived with his mutation for some time, Grammer will bring alive his struggle with his physical self. "Dark blue, gray, black fur, and strong animal-like features aren't exactly looked upon as 'normal' and at times in the film we will see him questioning something that might be able to help his problems." EDITOR'S NOTE: X3 --- MUTANTS IN THERAPY?

'Zero' hour for Favreau at Columbia
By Tatiana Siegel
Following on the heels of their recent "Zathura" collaboration, Columbia Pictures is back in business with Jon Favreau.

The multihyphenate is on board to write and direct the action drama "Johnny Zero" for the studio.

The story chronicles the birth of the hot-rod movement in the years after World War II.

Favreau is a self-described hot-rod enthusiast."I've always been intrigued with the culture and music of the postwar period," Favreau said. "The birth of hot rodding marked a new chapter in the American dream."

Favreau recently signed a deal with Sony Pictures Animation to write and produce "Neanderthals." He also provides one of the voices in SPA's first feature-length film, the upcoming "Open Season." Columbia president of production Matt Tolmach and executive vp Amy Baer will oversee for the studio.

"We are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with Jon, especially with such an exciting project as 'Johnny Zero,' " Tolmach said. "He is an incredibly gifted and original filmmaker, and we plan to be making movies with him for many years to come."

Favreau burst onto the Hollywood scene as the actor and writer of the offbeat comedy "Swingers." He then wrote, directed and appeared in Mafia crime drama "Made," which also starred Vince Vaughn and Sean Combs. He also helmed the boxoffice hit "Elf," starring Will Ferrell.

His acting credits include "Wimbledon," "Something's Gotta Give" and "Daredevil." He next appears opposite Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston in the romantic comedy "The Break Up."

EDITOR'S NOTE: AND BACK TO X3 FOR A SEC -----

Two Models Sign on for X3
X-men Films has reported "two models have signed a deal with Marvel Entertainment to be in the X-MEN 3 (or a possible spin off of the film). The women are Ashley Hartman and Mercedes Scelba-Shorte.

Mercedes will play a mutant simply known as M. Ashley is portraying Emma Frost.

For those not in the know, M equals Monet St. Croix from the old Marvel Comic GENERATION X. She's a mutant with amazing strength, telepathy, and the ability to fly. EDITOR'S NOTE: WHILE WEARING TEENY TINY, SKIN-TIGHT SPANDEX, NO DOUBT? And Emma Frost, aka The White Queen, is the attractive EDITOR'S NOTE: NATCH , yet deadly mutant who's currently a member of the X-Men team, but has had a past as a villainess. She was also once the head mentor of the Generation X team.

WHITE NOISE Sequel Set Up
Gold Circle Films is pushing forward with WHITE NOISE 2: THE LIGHT.

The sequel will center on a man's family who is murdered and he is brought back from the brink of death. The man realizes he has changed and can now identify those among the living who are about to die. When he tries to save people from their fate, he discovers there is a price to paid for interfering with the natural order of life and death. EDITOR'S NOTE: AIN'T THAT ALWAYS THE WAY?

Matt Venne wrote the script.

New Line Kills for CARNIVAL ROW
New Line Cinema has preemptively picked up Travis Beacham's fantasy script, KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW. The story is set in the future in a city called the Burgue. It looks curiously like 18th-century London, and the inhabitants are humans and other creatures. A serial killer is targeting some of those creatures.

Arnold and Anne Kopelson will produce.

Jane Takes on THE MUTANT
Pressman & Co. Films has cast Thomas Jane to star in THE MUTANT CHRONICLES.

The story is set in the 23rd century, in which four giant corporations have pillaged the last of the planet's resources, causing a demonic, marauding army of underworld NecroMutants to wage war against humans for what remains. EDITOR'S NOTE: KINDA LIKE 2005 PITTSBURGH?

Jane will play a Marine who leads a squad of soldiers against the alien hordes.

Ross Jameson wrote the script. Simon Hunter will direct.

Brevig Will Lead 3-D JOURNEY
Walden Media and New Line will co-finance the film JOURNEY 3-D. The movie will be a modern take on the Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Eric Brevig will direct from a script by D.V. DeVincentis. Charlotte Huggins will produce.

The story will follow a teenager and his scientist father who stumble onto a message hidden in an ancient artifact. Their attempt to solve the riddle leads them into a previously unseen world and the creatures that inhabit it.

"The film will be shot in live action, but the otherworldly landscapes and creatures will be supplied by high-definition, photo-real 3-D technology." EDITOR'S NOTE: BY THE BY, I SAW "THE POLAR EXPRESS" IN IMAX-3D YESTERDAY. GOOOOOORRRRRRGEOUS! (AND ONE CAN ONLY DROOL AND IMAGINE WHAT THE 2007 STAR WARS 3-D IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR).

Polson Tries a Little TENDERNESS
GreeneStreet Films has hired HIDE AND SEEK's John Polson to direct TENDERNESS. The script is based on Robert Cormier's serial killer novel .

The story centers on a teen runaway who becomes entangled with a charming serial killer around her own age.

Howard Meltzer of Turtleback Productions will produce.

Angelina Jolie returning as Lara Croft?
Seems the brains at Paramount are bringing buxom Lara Croft back to the big (though, I suspect things might change with the format) screen.

Angelina Jolie has reportedly expressed interest in wearing the sham British accent and boobs again for a “Tomb Raider 3” reports Coming Soon and TheBusinessOnline.com.

SCI, the new rights holder of the video game, is in talks with Paramount to do a second sequel to the game-cum-movie.

Recent rumours suggested that any future “Tomb Raider” film might go straight to DVD, and that Angelina Jolie had removed the film’s producers from her speed-dial. Seems something – a fishing rod with a fat batch of freshly rolled hundred dollar notes, at the end of it? – has changed her mind. EDITOR'S NOTE: SO VERY CYNICAL. SHAME SHAME.... (SNICKER)

The latest on Die Hard 4.0
FOX have started casting “Die Hard 4.0”, the long awaited fourth adventure for Bruno’s John McClane character. In this one, rumoured to be filming in Montreal Canada, the ex-cop takes on cyber terrorists.

Studio Insider ‘Sputnik’ offered a quick update on how it’s going today.

They're workshopping ideas on the New Orleans part of the script, due to Hurricane Katrina and dedicated loyal fans and even people at Fox who have managed to get hold of the script/have read reviews of it aren't liking the storyline at all, as well as the so-called bad guys and girls, who are computer hackers.

“Luc Besson is one director's name being banded around (as well as who did ‘Hostage’. I know he has the script and Willis does want to work with Luc again.EDITOR'S NOTE: SHUDDER. THERE GOES THE FRANCHISE. (MAYBE MR. W WANTS TO WORK WITH HIM AGAIN BECAUSE HE THROWS THE BEST CAST PARTIES? CAUSE IT SURE AIN'T WHAT SHOWS UP ON THE SCREEN THAT MAKES HIM SO POPULAR).

“He has stated it’s to be a stand alone Die Hard vehicle and if you haven’t seen the previous 3, it shouldn’t matter”. EDITOR'S NOTE: UMMM....YEAH. CAUSE THERE'S A BIG THRU-LINE AND INTRICATE PLOTTING IN THE 3 PREVIOUS ONES? A BIG, IMPORTANT ARC?

Apparently FOX are keen to release the film on DVD before the end of 2006, so expect it to be pretty much wrapped, released and doing a swift swoop of the theatres mid-year. EDITOR'S NOTE: IF THEY RUSH IT TOO MUCH, IT WON'T BE LOOPING SO MUCH AS CIRCLING (AS IN, THE DRAIN).
