Hollywood Dog Trots To Newsstands
August 26, 2005By Stephanie D. Smith
A year after New York-based Gatsby Publishing launched New York Dog on the east coast, the company will debut Hollywood Dog to celebrate canine culture in the West.

The October premiere issue drops on newsstands Aug. 28 with a $4.99 cover price and a 50,000 bimonthly distribution to primarily western U.S. states.

Gatsby president/CEO John Ryan says Hollywood Dog will cover doggie style, products and health in a similar format as its 75,000-circ New York sibling, but with a California sensibility. EDITOR’S NOTE: DOGGIE STYLE? APART FROM GOING TO A BAAD PLACE IF YOU PUT THE EMPHASIS WRONG THERE (AND WE DON’T WANT TO GO TO A BAAAAD PLACE), I AM NOW FEELING REALLY INSECURE BECAUSE I DON’T BELIEVE MY DOGGIE HAS A STYLE. (ODD ISN’T REALLY A STYLE, IS IT?)

Ryan says the Hollywood edition will more likely cover larger breeds and have fewer cold weather doggie products, like sweaters and parkas. Teen actress/musician Hilary Duff will be on the October cover with her Chihuahua. EDITOR’S NOTE: BARF.

The first issue has 150 pages with 116 pages of ads from brands such as Eukanuba, Pedigree, Hartz and mom and pop West Coast pet stores and manufacturers.

Ryan, who came from Ireland two years ago to head Gatsby, says American dogs are far more refined than those in Ireland. "In Ireland, dogs are used to herd sheep," he said. "They certainly aren't wearing Burberry."EDITOR’S NOTE: RAISE YOUR HANDS IF YOU THINK THIS IS AS IT SHOULD BE? (RAISE YOUR HANDS IF YOU WISH THE MAGAZINE WERE PUBLISHED IN YOUR CITY ANYWAY?)

But while Ryan chuckles at American pet owners who buy diamond studded collars and high vitamin shampoos and conditioners for their pets, such demand has helped the pet industry grow to a whopping $34 million a year business.

Moreover, the soaring growth means more opportunities for expansion—Gatsby is looking to launch additional editions of the dog title in Miami and Chicago. EDITOR’S NOTE: AND HOUSTON?

Ryan also noted the company is also planning to launch additional magazines outside of the pet realm in the next year or two.

The November issue of New York Dog, which also publishes bimonthly, hits newsstands at the end of September.

Hero Stamps
We have not been able to officially confirm this scoop, but here is what a Cinescape visitor wrote us about some upcoming comic book hero stamps:

According to the August issue of Linn's Stamp News, the Post Office is issuing a series of stamps in 2006 featuring DC Super Heroes. The 20 stamps will feature Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Hawkman, Supergirl, and Plastic Man. Each hero will be on two stamps, featuring different poses. The stamps will be released in conjunction with a major comic convention. Marvel Heroes will be in a series of 2007 stamps.
There is no mention of this on the U.S. Post Office's release schedule, yet, so keep your eyes peeled for more news and updates on the subject
. EDITOR’S NOTE: HOW COOL WOULD THIS BE!? (PAYING BILLS CAN BE FUN FUN FUN!)

EDITOR’S NOTE: AND JUST A REMINDER, THESE ARE COMING OUT 9/28/05!
