Monday OddsNEnds

FIRST UP, A COUPLE OF CLEARCHANNEL ITEMS. SINCE THEY OWN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE, IT SEEMS ONLY FAIR.

Clear Channel, other radio firms subpoenaed
Radio broadcasters Clear Channel Communications Inc. and Entercom Communications Corp. have received subpoenas from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer as part of an investigation into industry record promotion practices, the companies said Thursday.

People familiar with the investigation also said that Viacom Inc's Infinity Broadcasting had received a subpoena from Spitzer. Infinity declined to comment, and a spokeswoman for Spitzer's office was not immediately available.

A source familiar with the matter said the companies were informed about the subpoenas in the past couple of weeks. Spitzer has been investigating record labels' use of independent promoters, middlemen who are paid to push songs to radio programmers.EDITOR'S NOTE: I WOULD FIND ALL THIS CORPORATATION-BASHING MORE HEARTENING IF THE FOXES WEREN'T PATROLLING THEIR OWN CHICKEN COOPS. EDITOR'S NOTE: LEST WE HAVE ANY DOUBTS AS TO HOW SOON THE APPOCALYPSE IS TO ARRIVING....

It's also expected that Clear Channel's TV production unit will produce original fund-raising programs for PBS as a result of the deal, announced Thursday by Clear Channel Entertainment TV president Joe Townley and Gustavo Sagastume, vp syndicated and fund-raising programming at PBS.

The first tour to result from the partnership is a 20-date tour set for July 8-Aug. 7 for the singers featured on the "Celtic Woman" compilation albums, including Loreena McKennitt, Fiona Joyce and Aine Furey. The "Celtic Woman" artists are scheduled to be the focus of PBS' pledge-drive programming in March.EDITOR'S NOTE: WON'T LISTENING TO ALL THREE OF THESE LADIES AT ONCE LURE US ONTO THE ROCKS AND CERTAIN DEATH?

The Producers" scoops three nods
"The Producers" made a song and dance of this year's Society of London Theatre's Laurence Olivier awards held Sunday evening, skipping its way to three major nods.

The Mel Brooks musical, a send-up of Nazidom and showbiz, picked up the evening's nods for best new musical while Nathan Lane took to the stage to collect the best actor in a musical for the show.

Emmerich ready to get serious
Blockbuster director Roland Emmerich is getting ready to leave his popcorn image by making "more difficult, socially relevant" films, he said at a press conference Wednesday as he introduced his new production/financing company Reel Machine.EDITOR'S NOTE: OK. BUT WAIT FOR IT. (PUNCHLINE BELOW)

"I'm older now; I want to do other things," Emmerich said. " 'The Day After Tomorrow' was the first step. EDITOR'S NOTE: SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES! ONE MAN'S DEEP IS ANOTHER...UMM...TALLER...MAN'S SHALLOW, EH? I did what I always do, but for the first time, there was a message, as well. That's what I want to continue with Reel Machine."

The new company, a joint venture between Emmerich and German film fund VIP, will fully finance projects that Emmerich develops and/or directs

The Dish on Jeri Ryan
EDITOR'S NOTE: JUST FOR OUR DWEEBPAL ANDREW......
Many actors work in restaurants before they make it big, but Jeri Ryan ("Star Trek: Voyager," "Boston Public") is doing things the other way around.

Last week Ms. Ryan opened Ortolan, a French restaurant in West Los Angeles, with her significant other, chef Christophe Eme, EDITOR'S NOTE: LOOKS LIKE SHE DUMPED THE STAR TREK GUY SHE WAS DATING DURING HER 7-OF-9 YEARS. (WHO SHE HAD DUMPED HER HUSBAND FOR, AS I RECALL). previously of chi-chi L.A. eatery L'Orangerie.

Mr. Eme brings some of his signature dishes to the new space, which boasts a vertical herb garden right in the restaurant's bar.

One night last week Ms. Ryan was paying close attention to her guests, providing an exemplary level of service. Blink expressed interest in a lamb dish that can be ordered only for two people. When no one else at the table wanted lamb, Ms. Ryan stepped in, agreeing to order the other half for herself.

Talk about a full-service restaurant. The lamb, by the way, was delicious EDITOR'S NOTE: NO ONE I KNOW, I HOPE?
