Monday. Movie News. (notstarwars)

The Bald Truth about Kevin Spacey
Kevin Spacey stepped by radio show Bounty Hunter and confirmed that - streamers, balloons, party hats - he will indeed be going bald to play Lex Luthor.

The "Superman Returns" star adds, "It's going to be great fun, also because I get to work with a great director named Bryan Singer who did The Usual Suspects."

In other Super-news, rumours that footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El will be used for the film has been confirmed by Variety. A lot of footage of Brando from "Superman II" still exists and as it's never been used, Bryan Singer snapped it up. EDITOR'S NOTE: SO NO LIVING ACTORS WERE AVAILABLE?

Weaving saves V for Vendetta
In a shock development, Brit actor James Purefoy has caught a greyhound from the "V for Vendetta" shooting locale - never to return.

Seems the film's male lead departed the picture - co-starring foxy Natalie Portman - a few days back, and they've already got a replacement. Australian actor Hugo Weaving.

Weaving, who worked with the film's makers on "The Matrix" trilogy, will now be playing the character of V. As the character is wearing a mask most of the time, there's a chance many of Purefoy's scenes will be salvageable. EDITOR'S NOTE: OK, THAT WOULD BE WEIRD. WONDER FI PUREFOY GETS SCREEN CREDIT IF THEY LEAVE IN SOME OF HIS MASKED WORK.

Directed by James McTiegue, the film tells of a a shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" who uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.

SPIDER-MAN:
In a recent interview with SCI FI Wire, SPIDER-MAN helmer Sam Raimi revealed that Sony Pictures has plans to make a total of six films in the superhero franchise. Raimi even dropped that he might be willing to direct them all.

He says, "I've heard Amy Pascal [chairman of Sony's motion picture group] say she wants to make six Spider-Man pictures. ... So I think she's a woman of her word. And if she says there'll be six, there'll be six. ... If they were to ask me, and if I felt as passionate as I feel now about the
character and had this great hunger and desire to tell the story, which I really do now, you couldn't keep me away from it."
EDITOR'S NOTE: IF THEY'RE ALL AS GOOD AS THE SECOND ONE, AND ESPECIALLY IF THEY CAN KEEP KIRSTEN DUNST AND TOBEY MAGUIRE HAPPY FOR 6, THEN GO FOR IT! (I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THAT MAGUIRE WILL STAY WITH IT FOR THAT MANY, THOUGH. SAD TO SAY).

Raimi is currently in preproduction on SPIDER-MAN 3, which he says will partially deal with Peter's emotional journey as he deals with the death of Uncle Ben.

"The task that I had was to try and understand where he was when we last left him ... at the end of SPIDER-MAN 2, trying to figure out what he lacked as a human being, as far as
where he was immature and what he had not learned
," Raimi said.

SIDEWAYS star Thomas Haden Church has joined the cast as the villain, but nobody's saying who that is yet.

Raimi added, "We had to choose a villain that represented a proper obstacle in the path
of that growth. He says the identity of the bad guy is being withheld until Sony and Marvel can make a big presentation for the fans."

SPIDER-MAN 3 is set for a May 4, 2007 EDITOR'S NOTE: 2007?!! SHEESH, THAT'S TOO LONG FROM NOW!!! (YES, I'M GREEDY).release. Production on the film is scheduled to begin early next year.

Robinson Returns To War
Ann Robinson, who starred in George Pal's 1953 War of the Worlds movie, told SCI FI Wire that audiences may gasp when they see her cameo appearance, along with War co-star Gene Barry, in Steven Spielberg's upcoming update of the classic H.G. Wells tale.

In Spielberg's War of the Worlds, "When you first see Gene Barry and me on screen you say, 'Oh, my God, they do get married!'" Robinson said in an interview at the Saturn Awards this week. "'Oh, my heavens, Dr. Forrester and Sylvia Van Buren got together after all!'"

Robinson, who turned 70 two days before she presented an award at the May 3 Saturn Awards, said she plays Dakota Fanning's grandmother in Spielberg's War of the Worlds, which stars Tom Cruise as Fanning's father.

Robinson said that "there wasn't supposed to be any connection to my previous character whatsoever," but people in the know may recognize Spielberg's homage to Pal's film. "Steven Spielberg doesn't have to remake anything," Robinson added. "He does what he wants to do. But he loved George's movie, so he pays an homage to it. I think he's basing it more on the book, though."

Robinson said the story of the Earth's invasion by Mars is timeless. "It's about the annihilation of freedom," she said. "I think H.G. Wells was trying to show that British imperialism means nothing under different circumstances. Orson Welles had Hitler to contend with, and Mr. Pal has the Red Menace. And now Steven Spielberg has Al Qaeda. It's a continuous social commentary of what's going on at the time." EDITOR'S NOTE: I'D BE WILLING TO BET THAT THE IMPERIALISM SPIELBERG IS COMMENTING ON HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH ARAB LEADERS. YES?

Robinson added that her small part in the new War of the Worlds could spark renewed interest in her for more work. Other than cameos spoofing her Sylvia Van Buren character, Robinson's last film was Imitation of Life in 1959. "I don't know what could happen, a lot of people are beginning to call me," she said.

BUFFY to go HUNTING Again
Sarah Michelle Gellar has been set to star in Warner Independent Pictures' A GIRL'S GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING.

The script, written by Marc Klein, is based on stories from Melissa Bank's book of the same name. The story centers on a young New York book editor, to be played by Keller, who always has defined herself by the type of man she can get. When she meets and ensnares the affections of an older, very powerful and extremely sophisticated man, she thinks her problems are solved when they've only just begun.

The project was last announced in March 2001 with Reese Witherspoon to star in.

Walhberg Takes Hold of SAW Too
Donnie Wahlberg signed to star along with Franky G., Glenn Plummer, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Beverley Mitchell, Eric Knudse and Shawnee Smith, Dina Meyer and Tobin Bell in SAW 2 which began filming this week in Toronto.

The script was written by Leigh Whannel and Darren Lynn Bousman. Bousman is also directing.
Twisted Pictures' Gregg Hoffman, Oren Koules and Mark Burg are producing. The creators of the first SAW, James Wan and Leigh are executive producing. EDITOR'S NOTE: NOT THAT I REALLY CARE WHAT ANY OF THE WALHBERGS ARE DOING.....

MASTERMINDS Plan Big Screen Adaptation
Korean animation studio DG Spot and its production arm Morph have optioned the right to the graphic novel MASTERMINDS by Aaron Sowd, Denning and Lance Karutz.

The story centers on five freakish felons who have only one thing standing between them and global domination: each other. The group, led by the Maniacal Monocle, includes mad scientist Doktor Pimento, giant robot CPU-571, mobster Vinnie DiThug and the mutant monkey Gorilla King. Ultimately, their dream of being able to call the shots for one day is marred by overly complicated plans and infighting.

Stan Lee will voice a role.

James Horner to score FLIGHTPLAN
Rachel Portman is no longer involved in the scoring of the upcoming Jodie Foster thriller FLIGHTPLAN, according to Music from the Movies. James Horner has taken over the project, hired by the producers who – according to a source at Walt Disney Pictures – ultimately decided that they would be more comfortable with a composer that they have a long, successful history with.

Horner will record the score for the film in July. Rachel Portman is still onboard the prestigious OLIVER TWIST project for Roman Polanski. Her score for the film was recently recorded in Prague.

According to MFTM sources, Horner is also attached to THE LEGEND OF ZORRO, still awaiting official confirmation. Recently, Horner wrote the music for the small independent feature THE CHUMSCRUBBER. EDITOR'S NOTE: OK, SO YOU WANT SEMI-ETHEREAL IRISH STUFF. HIRE HORNER. BUT RACHEL PORTMAN ISN'T EXACTLY CHOPPED LIVER. AND IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ALL THAT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO GET COMFY WITH HER. I MEAN, HER CV IS RATHER EASY TO LOOK UP.

Elfman to Leave Spider-Man Hanging?
Superherohype.com reports that composer Danny Elfman will follow in the footsteps of John Dykstra (who left SPIDER-MAN 3 earlier this year) and take his leave from the SPIDER-MAN franchise. Elfman has cued up much work for 2007 (the year of SPIDER-MAN 3'S anticipated release), including the rumor of scoring the movie adaptation of the adventures of the super heroine: WONDER WOMAN.

After much creative differences between Sam Raimi and Danny Elfman during the post-production of SPIDER-MAN 2, Raimi brought in other composers to complete the unfinished score. One of those composers was Christopher Young, and according to sources close to Raimi and Elfman, it appears that Young will be hired for to score SPIDEY3.

Elfman is currently working on THE CORPSE BRIDE & CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY for Tim Burton.

Singer has a thing for Milk
So much for those rumours about a "Superman" sequel being filmed back-to-back with the current caper - Bryan Singer's gone and got himself locked into an unrelated project for his film after the Man of Steel stint.

Based on the book by Randy Shilts, "The Mayor of Castro Street" tells of San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, an openly gay man elected to office in the U.S., and consequently assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by supervisor Daniel White. Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, and Tom DeSanto will serves as producers. Brandon Boyce ["Apt Pupil"] will pen the screenplay.

"Harvey created a concept and pride for a disenfranchised group at a point in history when the world was in upheaval, and he paid the highest price for it," Singer tells Variety.

New Line Cinema remaking All of Me
Hollywood's turning to a Steve Martin classic for their next retool. New Line have announced plans to remake the Martin/Lily Tomlin starrer "All of Me", in which the soul of a dying heiress accidentally transfers floats it's way into an unsuspecting bloke's body.

Variety says Wanda Sykes ["Monster-In-Law"] is set to play the Tomlin role. No word on who's playing Martin's part but the trades states that they're giving the redo a 'hip sensibility' so chances are that won't be Martin back in the saddle. EDITOR'S NOTE: AWWW. THAT'S GOTTA STING A BIT.

Edwards Cast in ZODIAC
Anthony Edwards has joined the cast David Fincher's serial-killer thriller ZODIAC.
Edwards will play the partner of the lead police investigator on the case, played by Mark Ruffalo.

Jamie Vanderbilt is adapting from Robert Graysmith's nonfiction tome "Zodiac" and 2002 sequel "Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed."

Surfs up for SILVER SURFER Movie
Executives from Marvel and Fox told SCI FI Wire that serious plans are in the workds for a SILVER SURFER movie. Marvel's Avi Arad said they were finishing F4 "and the next thing we'll go on our way to Silver Surfer."

Fox's Tom Rothman told SCI FI Wire, "I think the tricky thing on Silver Surfer, which hasn't been resolved yet, is the nature of the Surfer and to what extent digital work is used and to what extent it isn't.

THE DARK IS RISING for Walden Media
Walden Media has picked up the film rights to Susan Cooper's five-book fantasy-adventure series, THE DARK IS RISING SEQUENCE.

The first film will be based on the second book of the series, THE DARK IS RISING. The story centes on a modern-day boy who learns on his 11th birthday that he's the Sign Seeker -- the last of a group of immortals who have dedicated their lives to fighting forces of the Dark. As he uncovers a series of clues, some dating back to biblical times, the boy also discovers the future of the world rests in his hands. EDITOR'S NOTE: THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN QUITE FREQUENTLY TO 11-YEAR-OLD BOYS. (AND THEN IT'S UP TO THE GIRLS TO FIX THINGS LATER, I GUESS?)

The other books in the series are "Over Sea, Under Stone," "Greenwitch," "The Grey King" and "Silver on the Tree."

Senaka Looks INTO THE MIRROR
Video director Sanji Senaka has been hired by Regency Enterprises to direct the horror film INTO THE MIRROR.

The story, written by Joe Gangemi, centers on spirits from a different plane which terrify shoppers in a mall. EDITOR'S NOTE: WITH HIGH PRICES AND BAD PARKING, NO DOUBT.

THE GIRL NEXT DOOR's Marc Sternberg will produce.

Senaka has previously directed music videos for Mary J. Blige, Tori Amos, Maxwell and Lauren Hill.

Fincher Wants Pitt and Blanchett for BUTTON
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are in discussions to star in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON for director David Fincher.

The script, written by Eric Roth, is based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald story about an elderly man who gets younger as time passes and encounters complications when, at age 50, he falls in love with a woman who is 30. EDITOR'S NOTE: SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME ON MOVIE SCREENS, DOESN'T IT? (ALTHOUGH THE GUY WOULD BE OLDER AND THE WOMAN WOULD BE EVEN YOUNGER).

Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures are co-financing the film. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.

Shrek 3 storyline spilt
The gang at Coming Soon rubbed shoulders with DreamWorks' co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg at a press conference for "Madagascar", and squeezed some "Shrek 3" details out of the bigwig.

Katzenberg unzipped the bag on the plot for the Mike Myers starring sequel, saying

"When 'Shrek 3' opens, Shrek and Fiona are having to take on the duties of being the active king and queen of Far, Far Away. When we left him, the King was quite literally croaking. They're not very comfortable in these roles, so the King says to them, "If you can find the heir to the throne and bring him back, the Kingdom will be in good hands, then you can return to swamp and live your lives." Which is what they want to do. Shrek, Donkey and Puss go to the far side of the Kingdom of Far, Far Away where young "Artie", who is the nephew of Queen Lilian, is about to graduate school. Artie turns out to be young King Arthur and Shrek and Donkey and Puss have to convince this extremely rebellious young man, who's being voiced by Justin Timberlake, to come back and assume the throne. Along the way, Shrek invents the Round Table, chivalry. Donkey is the Lady in the Lake with the sword. You get it. Meanwhile, back at the Kingdom of Far, Far Away, Prince Charming decides that it's time for a coup d'etat. "The cat's away. He will play" So Fiona organizes all of the princesses into the underground Resistance movement, who are trying to hold things together until Shrek, Donkey, Puss and young King Arthur return. There you go." EDITOR'S NOTE: I'M THINKIN IT WILL PLAY BETTER THAN IT READS?
